Parking in the downtown area of Santa Monica isn’t always easy. And with so many more people visiting the area these days, traffic can complicate the seemingly simple act of finding a space. The big structures on 2nd and 4th Street are great (90 minutes free!) but during busy times street traffic can make these difficult to utilize. If you happen to be on your own, there are a couple ways around the scrum. My favorite involves the Main Library parking lot as an alternative to street parking meters. You can enter the underground garage on 7th Street between Arizona and Santa Monica. This lot offers 30 minutes for free, and $1.00 per hour for the following 2 hours, then $1.00 per 30 minutes thereafter. Compare that rate to the meter’s rate of $0.25 per 7 minutes (or $2.00 per hour), and it’s a much more cost-friendly choice.

If you really want to get efficient, sign up for the Santa Monica Breeze Bike Share program (covered more in another of my blog posts) and grab a bike from the rack on the street level next to the garage parking entrance you drove in through. For 10 cents a minute (or less if you’ve purchased a monthly or annual pass), you can quickly cruise to wherever you need to be without much of the traffic headache or parking expense.

Happy parking!
